Marking machines are no longer the stuff of science fiction!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, my former English teacher used to have this joke. When we asked him if he had marked our essays—often on the day we’d handed them in!—he would smile and say, “Sorry. Not yet. My marking machine’s broken.”

We were young. First years, or year 7s in today’s money. It took us a while to realise that he was joking. No, he did not have some magical machine. He had to read and annotate and assess and grade every single error-strewn essay himself, by hand, on top of all the teaching and preparation, and... you get the picture.

Happily, a little time later, in another education universe, the way we assess learners is undergoing a significant transformation.
